If you are mainly wanting to play DVDs, you could consider buying a DVD player to attach to the TV. They also play CDs. Cabling is minimal, just a power cord and an HDMI cable.

Not forgeting this Linux system will cast to a Chromecast on another non smart tv.
One simple solution ( since Linux doesn't want to play nice) is attach a Chromecast to the TV, they can be completely hidden, and it would get around the windows being slow problem, allowing you to use Linux.

Another option is to beef up the laptop to make windows work better, more expensive but put in a small SSD, increase ( if not already) to 4-8GB memory, disable all the settings that hog any power, and it would run fine, got an old Celeron with 6GB and while not exactly top end speed it runs reasonable for what it is.
Update / Upgrades = Replace old bugs with new ones.

I found LG SmartShare does work from windows but is somewhat limited.
As yet there is no Linux version.

I have come to a compromise that does work, in the mean time.
I riped some dvd movies to a external hard drive & connected it to a usb port on the tv.
I believe someone did suggest this or something similar.

Thanks for all the advice guys.
