    Default Another great has gone

Sir Stirling Moss has died aged 90.

I remember seeing him race at Ardmore circuit around 1960. What a driver!

I thought you were going to refer to Tim Brooke-Taylor, Ken. He also died, but from covid9, sadly.

Moss largely retired in 1962, following a crash that saw him in a coma for a month.
He careered into a bank of earth at 100 km/h (160 km/h) without a seatbelt while competing in the Formula One Glover Trophy.

It took 45 minutes to cut him from the wreckage and he suffered brain injuries, and his body's left side was partially paralysed for six months.
With his eyesight and reflexes also permanently damaged, Moss quit racing.

he won 212 of the 529 races he entered across several categories of competition and has been described as "the greatest driver never to win the World Championship"

Yes....so never mind the 212 he did win huh.

I saw him at Ardmore in 1962 win the NZGP in absolute pouring rain.

I think he lapped the entire field and Bruce McLaren came third three laps behind.

Not sure who came second, but he was a long way from Moss.

Ta B.M. '61 was the last race I saw there. I used to go each year with my Dad before that, but '62 I was out of town if I remember right.

You weren’t at Pukekohe in ‘63 were you Ken?

I’d have to look up who won as I was furthering my education.

I remember a “Truth” article reporting that a local farmer had said that had his prize Bull been there he’d have been blushing.
