"If Fawlty Towers is now being removed by the BBC then humour is dead. The puritans are winning because the establishment is weak and has no self confidence."

We met him, he broke the fence and while we were fixing it, he objected.

Maybe he wants the fence broken - gives him another exit when the cops come knocking.

Spelling is no longer taught how it used to be when I was at school ( I'm 79), but we knew how to spell, and also learned English Grammar.
The cop out reason is everyone has spell checker, only it is American spell checker, so it is not correct English.
How one can consider themselves educated when they cannot spell, when they cannot speak or write coherent and concise English without repeated grammatical errors is a mystery to me.
Teaching standards have been lowered, all to many entering the teaching profession should not be taking that career direction because their own education is fundamentally deficient.
Students are not encouraged to read classic literature, which is a great source in improving an individuals own written expression
It is not only English expression both written and oral that is not correctly addressed in today's schools, there are major deficiencies in basic numeracy, children cannot carry out basic arithmetical processes and mental arithmetic is becoming a lost skill. I tackled one teacher on the failure to teach basic arithmetic to year 5 and 6 pupils, and her answer was it is not necessary nowadays as it is now the computing age and it is no longer necessary - My answer - so you teach binary them - she asked what is that, "Well you told me it is the computing age - it is the basics on which computers calculate"- wasted on her. The Head teacher at the local H. Intermediate told me that if a pupil is backward in Arithmetic, the odds on is that they came from H. Primary School and were taught in Standard 2 and 3 by Mrs L. McD. (But nothing was ever done about it)
NZ like Australia is increasing lagging behind other countries in Literacy and Numeracy, the play way of education and the dilution of school syllabuses, by so much non core material is not doing children any favours. The bright children will always win out, but the average child is disadvantaged, and unfortunately all too often it flows on into their careers and life.
Couldn't agree more. And now they want to eliminate the teaching of Latin which is one of the building blocks of English and of immense use in determining the meaning of unfamiliar terms. French and German might be valued in the same way.
And the specious reason given is that Latin is no longer spoken and French and German are only of use as conversational languages in their countries of origin.
So the not-so-smart kids are disadvantaged, drop out of education early to enter the ranks of the unemployed and ultimately the criminal classes. All because the education profession has become incompetent and unworthy of the appellation "professional."
It is my prediction that if the educationalists have their way, we will eventually revert to communicating with a series of grunts. Oh wait. The teenagers have already reached that point.
