Each year it has a large impact on the community, with 10-20% of New Zealanders infected. The flu cause around 400 deaths a year in New Zealand.

New Zealand had about 48,000 influenza cases in the 2008 flu season 42% of which were type A and approximately 100 deaths a year directly attributed to influenza viruses.

2009 flu pandemic in New Zealand

On 21 October, the Ministry of Health announced that the total number of death attributed to swine flu was 19 . As of 7 July, there are 1195 confirmed cases.

    Monday, 25 June 2012

New Zealand had 961 confirmed cases, up from 945 the day before.

The region housing the largest number of swine flu patients is Wellington followed by Auckland then Canterbury
The Waikato comes in at a distant forth , followed closely by Bay of Plenty/Lakes

Hawke's Bay, Wanganui, Palmerston North, Nelson and Marlborough are tied

    International Update June 2009

On the 12 June 2009 the United Nations declared the spread of the influenza virus around the world had reached pandemic levels. The global pandemic alert level is now at its highest phase six an indication of its geographical spread, not its severity.

As of 17.00 GMT, 15 June 2009, 76 countries officially reported 35,928 cases of Influenza A (H1N1) infection and 163 deaths. Cases below are confirmed by WHO laboratory testing.

    Grand total 35928

The study showed that the inequalities in influenza deaths are striking:

In the key 65-79 year age group, Māori are 3.6 times more likely to die of influenza than those of European/other ethnicity. And Pacific People are 2.4 times more likely to die compared with European/others during a typical flu season.

Those living in the most deprived 20 per cent of neighbourhoods are almost twice (1.8 times) as likely to die of influenza compared with those living in the least deprived areas.

Men are also more vulnerable, with males aged 65-79 years almost two times (1.9 times) more likely to die of influenza than females.

The estimated average mortality rate was 13.5 per 100,000 people

Circulatory illness caused the largest proportion of influenza deaths,

    LOL.
It's not the least charm of a theory that it is refutable. The hundred-times-refuted theory of "free will" owes its persistence to this charm alone; some one is always appearing who feels himself strong enough to refute it - Friedrich Nietzsche
