OPINION: I'm going out on a limb by disagreeing with other Māori academics and Māori organisations about the $56.5 million allocated by the government for a "special Māori response action plan" for Covid-19.
According to Stuff, $30 million has been targeted directly to Māori health services and a further $15 million to Whānau Ora commissioning agencies to support vulnerable whanau.
The remainder of funding seems to be targeted towards Māori businesses.
Don't get me wrong – Māori health services and the Whānau Ora commissioning agencies do an amazing job providing services to Māori across the country who feature at the wrong end of the health and social issues spectrum. I just don't see the rationale to put $56.5 million towards a special Māori response action plan for Covid-19.
