POTs (plain not plane) Yeah I know . By the time I saw it the edit option was gone :-)Spark are moving away from the copper network wherever there are alternatives and will not normally reconnect an old copper line in cases like this. Remember the copper connection belongs to chorus and spark have to pay them for it, but the cellular network is completely theirs.
the POTs (plain not plane - just saying)network is on it's last legs and will progressively move onto the broadband system over the next few years so copper or otherwise your phone line will not be running off a telephone exchange any more in the near future.
I don't have a landline but I don't like my internet going down in a power cut either so the ONT and router are fed from a cheap UPS.

As far as I know VDSL still uses the copper wiring but a speedier type modem than ADSL, hence the cheap copper telephone line.
It's not the least charm of a theory that it is refutable. The hundred-times-refuted theory of "free will" owes its persistence to this charm alone; some one is always appearing who feels himself strong enough to refute it - Friedrich Nietzsche

yea, I'm with Orcon atm - landline is $5 month on pots line with unlimited VDSL
In a country area, but still usually get 60 - 65 Mbps, so quite happy with that
Didn't even put a phone cable in when I built this house, rural area that can only get adsl2 so no point as spark 4G is faster, fibre is highly unlikely to ever come here

Thats VOIP system. Its not a copper landline.
VOIP phones dont work if your power goes down.
Spark:
ADSL/VDSL
$99.99/mth for a minimum 12 month term. Add a landline for $10/mth.
Here its only $10 , as you are allready paying for the copper line in the ADSL/VDSL fee.
Chorus charge for use of the copper landlines. Theres no way around that cost if you still want copper landlines
