Lucky kid, even my son can't afford that, he's 41.

There are two names in VR on the PC mainly. Others exist but haven't really made an impact. Sony have one for the PS4 as well.
So we have Oculus Rift and HTC Vive as the original two contenders. They both have newer products I think but I haven't kept up with the names or specs.

I think they are fairly equivalent and it comes down to preference and game selection. Getting one from either brand would probably be fine. I think Vive does better room scale if you have a lot of space to set it up.

I have the original Oculus rift I bought directly from their online store for about $700 after a price reduction. Although it's pretty cool I find I mainly get it out to show visitors and don't use it much other than that. It gives me motion sickness in some games and regardless I can't use it for more than about 15 minutes at a time until I have to take it off. Apparently the newer models have improved on this but I'm not spending the money again. One thing that I do like is a few videos I've watched touring around famous sights.

It's an expensive toy, and one that may or may not get a lot of use. Also make sure the PC is up to it, it needs to have a decent graphics card for VR. Something like a 1060 or better. The original Rift I have also needs a spare HDMI port and 3 USB 3 ports Ideally

For me personally I would need them to get rid of the cables and up the resolution for me to consider it again. Both are being worked on though.

Edit: Just a final thought. I have a $30 ish samsung gear VR I bought for my galaxy S8 smartphone to test the whole VR thing out before spending hundreds. It's not as good but it's still pretty cool and I wish I'd just stuck with that sometimes.

It might be worth reading through this https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews...sets,4722.html

    Good article comparing current offerings.

Edit seems to be missig the current Oculus rift in the comparison though.
