Default Government buys Kate Sheppard's house

NZ Government buys Kate Sheppard's house
    pays $4.5Million
Is been modernised, so its historic value is surely long gone.

Im sure the families living in cars and garages will see the great value in this asset.
I think the homeless should camp out there , and just move in. Put the govt to shame .

    So $4.5Million
A total waste of OUR money ??
And they paid too much for it "An independent valuation last year put its market value at $4.1m."

    It gets worse
"The villa passed in at auction in October, when Harcourts Holmwood auctioneer Phil McGoldrick said the owner was unwilling to discuss a sale price of less than $3.5 million. The property was valued at $3.15m."

How can this be anything less than corruption at govt depts .

I think they work on the theory that people care for a week, then it's forgotten.

They're not wrong either. Just keep watching that land grab at eeehumaotoe. 10x that amount will be paid to Fletchers by this guvvmint.

And in a week or two, nothing. All is forgiven.

The trouble with that thinking is that looking after the poor and homeless is, unfortunately, a bottom-less pit.
If the goverment spent all its money on social problems, we would have no roads, sewerage systems, etc.

The secret is to provide everyone with a job, (like in Otorohanga) and stop giving a tax bonus to landlords and give one to families that buy their own home.

This is fantastic news, money well spent on saving important heritage, this home not only has NZ significance but also world as well, so far NZ has been very poor at preserving heritage/historic homes/buildings, proximity to the university should ensure it is well visited and used. On a side issue perhaps Heritage NZ couldn consider putting those blue plaques on former residents of notable Nzers, as is done in the UK. As for those saying money could be better spent elsewhere, governments can spend in more than one area at once, each area has its budget.
