Have you tried their own uninstall tool? https://www.avg.com/en-ww/avg-remover
Non-system disk or disk error. Replace and strike any key when ready.
Yes, tried that, didn’t work. Unless I did it wrong somehow, might have another go tomorrow when not so tired..... AVG a real b$#@&*% when it’s stuck on there!

I haven't used it for ages, I can only think it needs admin privileges probably, or Win10 is doing something weird as usual.
What's exactly the problem with AVG? You could manually remove startup entries, services etc.
Have you tried reinstalling it, then using the removal tool?
I used AVGclear from Google. It worked for me. PJ
Deafness.
When I was younger I heard but didn't listen.
Now I am older, I listen but cannot hear.
If it is not broke, don't make it broker by trying to make it better. (This applies specifically to PJ)
It only gives the options of Change/Repair . I’ll try the admin privileges if I can find out how to open it that way.I haven't used it for ages, I can only think it needs admin privileges probably, or Win10 is doing something weird as usual.

You should always run such tools as Admin. There's often locked/system files with AV software that a "normal" privileges can't remove.
Right click the .exe AVGclear or whatever choose "run as admin", I haven't used the tool for a while but choose "change" and then follow through to uninstall I think.
It's not the least charm of a theory that it is refutable. The hundred-times-refuted theory of "free will" owes its persistence to this charm alone; some one is always appearing who feels himself strong enough to refute it - Friedrich Nietzsche
I use the 'AVGClear' tool a lot and it's pretty good most of the time. Running it in safe mode is not a bad idea.
Microsoft: "You've got questions. We've got dancing paperclips."
All fixed now, finally got rid of it in Safe Mode and deleted all the start ups files too. Thanks for all the ideas guys!
