Question for Wordpress experts

Is there a way short of just uploading a new file, of renaming an existing published Wordpress document?

E.G. There is a document published with the name "Newsletter" with the file name Fred.pdf and I want to rename it to Joe.pdf. I know I can just replace Fred with Joe by uploading the renamed file, but I would like to avoid that if poss.

Thanks for the link. I'm very much a Wordpress n00b and occasional user/editor, but I think that article is talking about moving/renaming the actual WordPress files, rather than files that are user data, i.e. stuff that I have uploaded to appear on the site.

I have seen other articles that although not directly reflecting my circumstances, strongly suggest that you can't just rename stuff once it is uploaded, but have to replace those files with a new upload with a different name. I'm guessing that by doing that all the links etc are automatically reconfigured. I can do that if necessary, but I'd like to know if there is another way.

Thanks for the link. I had actually come across that page, but as I am not the owner/administrator of the site, it is not really an option. I think it is going to be easier to just re-upload the files. It will be a one-time exercise and with only maybe a dozen files involved the hassle of trying to convince someone to install a plugin is probably not worth it. I noticed the other day that we are not even on the latest version of Wordpress, which gives you an idea of the competence/awareness of the site administrator.

Do you have access to the backend at all? If so you can go to the media manager and do it there. If you're just a front end use though there is no way for you to control files as all uplaods generally go to a universal folder meaning you would have access to everyones files, not just your own.
