Yes, I connect anything to mine and that happens....USB gadgets, cameras, phones, whatever.

The tablet needs to be put into mtp (media transfer protocol) mode or mass storage, depending on how old it is, mtp reads sd cards and storage on the tablet, mass storage is just the sd card. For most android devices its a setting youll find in storage under usb, could be stupidly hidden in a menu.

Linux supports mass storage out of the box and may support mtpfs (mtp file system). Your tablet sounds like it could be in ptp (photo transfer protocol) mode or some form of web cam tethering.

The alternatives are install some kind of server on the tablet like SSH and transfer files over a network. Bluetooth transfer, as long as each device has bluetooth.

Oh, and another thing, not all usb cables are created for data transfers, some are just for charging so you'll need to be positive the cable is correct.

OK - I'll try the Bluetooth method first. I have a small nub-usb for this 'puter as it's old enough to have never heard of Blue-anything...........

There are Android apps that do file transfers via wifi. Thats an easy option, you just need to find the app that also has a Linux client
finding where the files actually are in phone is the hard part :-)

airdroid has a browser interface that should work in Linux (?)

heres some more , perhaps KDEconnect ?

I have used wifi file transfer pro on a few different browsers including on linux and it seems to work, when you launch it you get an ip address to input on the broswer displayed on the app screen.
I haven't used it much though because I generally just use the cable.

I just tested wifi file transfer pro on a linux machine, works fine but accessing the sd card instead of the internal storage is a little clunky.
The only way I can see is to hit the parent directory button a few times until I can find an oddly named folder that turns out to be the SD card

I forget, it was a string of numbers and letters starting with 55 or something like that, nothing to suggest it was external storage except it was the odd one out.

OK - that's somewhat helpful --- I know that this is an oddball problem, but I'll have to work on it in the AM.
