    Default Towing a trailer

In the near future I will be embarking on a new adventure - towing a trailer with an automatic.
Anything I should know about? Traps for young players?

If it's a CVT, it may void warranty. Other than that, I've never found it different to towing in a manual (never towed in a CVT myself though).

As Nick said check the small print if you have a CVT gearbox, daft as it may seem they are not meant to be used for towing

Have to remember that most would not know they have a CVT Gearbox in their car

Most makes now with CVT"s have Maximum tow restrictions in their manuals but this applies to all vehicles

No, not a CVT, so that's all good. Thanks.

    Hideous invention.

Had practice backing with things on a towbar?

    It's a PITA.

First time towing, or just first time in an automatic?

Rather exagerated. I hated the first one I drove, but now I own one and it's not that bad. They continue to improve them, and actually have reduced the efficiency a bit in some of them to make people happy with the way they feel.
Mine only feels bad under heavy acceleration which you can improve somewhat with the S mode. The rest of the time it does all the things you said just fine. Once you get used to it regular automatics can actually feel a bit clunky.

Yeah there's a bit of a disconnect from the throttle to getting power on the wheels, and when you put your foot down it feels something like a slipping clutch giving you a lot of revs with no obvious effect initially. But that's hardly the end of the world. If you have a lead foot and an addiction to instant power you'll never like them, but it's a jump from there to "Hideous invention". Also a lot of heavy machinery uses them these days so they can build them strong enough to tow if they want to.

Yes it is. I've done it, but I'm not that good at it.

First time in an automatic. As I said to Piroska, I've done it, but I'm not good at it. My driveway has a slight curve to it that changes, and it always takes me a couple of bites to back along it.

I've always said that the test for citizenship should include (a) being able to run in jandals and (b) be able to back a trailer.
