Default 100% HDD usage when RAM near full (Win10)

If I'm using a lot of editing programs at once (installed on SSD) my 8gb RAM is usually at 7.5gb and I notice my mechanical HDD usage is at 100%. I thought if the RAM usage isn't 100% then it must be enough, but the HDD usage usually spikes when the RAM usage is high. I don't understand why the HDD is so high yet the SSD is always around 10%, especially when the programs I'm using are installed on the SSD. All I can assume is the SSD programs are spilling over but I don't know why it's the HDD that spikes, not the SSD.

Probably that's where the swap file is. Change it to the SSD and add more RAm as well.

Is that the page file? If so that's on the parent C: and it's 7gb.

I was just doing some photoshop work and noticed not only was the RAM was almost full but the pagefile usage was also quite high. When I quit Photoshop the RAM usage dropped a little but the pagefile dropped much more. Does this mean the pagefile fills up before the RAM gets near to filling up? I thought the RAM was only just coping but maybe I'm actually using a lot more than I thought because the pagefile is so high simultaneously. Check the Afterburner screen:

Back in the day, Photoshop 6, there was an option to use another HDD as the working folders for Photoshop, this is probably to get round the problems you are having, look in preferences in Photoshop to do this.

Boot up the pc then when the desktop is loaded up.. look in taskmanager and see how much ram you have left. BEFORE loading anything else.

then what? if I'm still getting 100% usage on my HDD when my RAM is still at 7.5gb does that mean I am or I'm not using above 8gb? That's the point of this thread.

I think that's the only real solution, especially as I use more than just PS simultaneously.

    .
then go into taskmanger - performance - resource manger - HD
and see whats causing all the HD activity.

Often it drops down after a few minutes or so . Lots of stuff happening just after bootup, syncing to cloud storage, AV startup scans, checking for AV updates, programs loading up etc etc
Failing HD can show as excessive HD activity (due to HD running exceedingly slow)

crystaldiskinfo shows it's healthy, it's just at 100% when I'm using too many programs and my RAM is over 7.5gb, not after startup but hours later when I'm switching between programs spiking for a few minutes.
