Default So sad - the Christmas Cake is finished

SWMBO bakes a lovely fruit cake for Christmas but sadly I had the last slice yesterday. I even picked up all of the crumbs from the cake tin.

Looks as though I will have to wait for the coming Christmas for the next Christmas cake.

Oh how lucky you are!! SWMBO doesn't bake them any more with just the 2 of us and I am the only one who eats it. A friend gives us half of the one that she makes as a little gift for my computer assistance I give during the year.

I don't really NEED it SWMBO says.

You know christmas cake is just a fruit cake, and can be made any time of the year, and not just Christmas.....like hot Cross buns are just spicy fruit buns and not just an easter treat.

You might have to steal her recipe and make it year round.

So ask for another, no need to wait until year end to have cake if you like it.

Think there are slight differences in both those items.

xmas cakes/puddings, would have had sherry addition and buns added certain spices.

If you like the cake so much, why not go bake one yourself?

You might be surprised at the end result and SWMBO might even tell you that it is now your job to bake this year's cake

    Men are better bakers, anyway

Er...no? Some make it with that, some without.
No reason you can't make it any other time.

Christmas cake shouldn't have sherry 'shudder' it should have brandy.

We got a free cake from Hanmer Lions, sadly when I opened it the box contained one fruit cake sans marzipan or icing which is the whole point of Christmas cakes. Not that Christmas is a real thing its just a fake replacement for the Solstice festival.

gary67, you could be right with brandy, father and grandfather were caterers/bakers and it's been 4 score years and more since we were in the old bake-house watching how things were made, and they used proper layered icing too.

Part of the old building still stands on the current owners land, when we up there 3 years ago.
