10 year smoke alarms

Are any of these reliable. It appears that they all give trouble no matter what the purchase price.? Google information not that helpful. Have you found one that is satisfactory.?

I don't use them personally, but consumer recommends the Goldair GS-526 for whatever that's worth. They also give the same score to about 8 other units though.

That is why I don't take much notice of Consumer these days, especially now that are endorsing some products which never used to happen.

I have got a couple of them as I was so sick of the $15 or 20 ones crapping out, going off all the time for no reason and chirping all the time.
I have had 4 of them and one kept going off and I threw it away. It was a Fire Angel from Mitre Ten I note that they no longer stock that brand, even though it was recommend by the British Fire Service!
I have another one that goes off once in a while for no reasons.

But the manuals do say that they need blowing out occasionally.

When you spend $40 on a small item you expect it to perform.

The idea being that if I am asleep in my bedroom and there is a fire in the kitchen it will set my bedroom alarm off.

My worry is though that if one of them goes off in error, they will all start beeping, even while I am at work!

Thanks for your comments which confirm my thoughts on the dam things. Even the most expensive ones have problems.

I bought a heap of the 5 year ones about 2 years ago. I had to pull one down last week as it went off twice at random times. Will put it somewhere else and see what happens.

We got about 4 years before the thing started chirping to say the battery needed replacing. Of course this started happening as we were dropping off to sleep. Naturally.

The damn thing kept going off each time we toasted bread, until we got into the habit of hiding it in a clothes locker before toasting. Not unreasonable really because the campervan is in a relatively small, confined space. However I imagine the number of times it went off compromised the life of the battery.

you paid for an alarm it did not guarantee that you would get 10 years out of them. You have proved my point. I have replaced our three alarms with a less expensive 10 year model.

The thing is they promote those things as ten years life.
So if they crap out before then should we take them back and get a refund?
This may backfire as the retailers and or manufacturers will stop making and selling them.
Or will it encourage them to make them more reliable?
