The distance from Auckland to the earthquake epicentre is almost a couple of hundred miles longer than it is from say, Billings to Los Angeles.

The difference, WalOne, is that the likelihood of a tidal wave between Billings and Los Angeles is vanishingly small, but...

Not really true piroska, Christchurch was very badly damaged by the series of earthquakes it endured. The results are worse than bombs being dropped (except for nuclear of course) because with a bomb you can see the crater and know where the damage will most likely be but the earthquakes damaged everything unexpectedly like underground drains, water reticulation, cracked pipes randomly, raised and lowered the land, mostly where you see bridges that you have to climb up a small slope to cross it isn't the bridge that's risen it's the ground that's fallen, same with drain inspection covers.

Thousands of buildings were rendered unusable and dangerous to enter.

We always had tremors here but the earthquakes were another thing altogether. Life changing, causing a re-evaluation of life values and priorities. I have read about earthquakes but until you are in one for real you can't really appreciate how devastating they are.

There was a tendency after the Chch for the people in the rest of the country to dismiss the continuous coverage and want new news which happened quite soon with the Fukushima event.

After almost 10 years Christchurch central city and lots of suburbs are still an utter mess, especially the roads.
