Hard drive very slow.

I have a Dell Intel Core i7 laptop with 2 drives.
* 931GB Seagate ST1000LM035-IRK172 (sata)
* 119GB LITEON CV8-8E128-11 SATA 128GB (SATA SSD)

My main OS is Mint 18.3, dual booted with Windows 10 Pro 64bit v1803, both on the SSD.
I need more space on the SSD, so cloned the W10 to a partition on the Seagate. Works Ok but takes up to 4 minutes to boot W10, and at least a minute to shut down.
The W10 on the SSD boots in about 40 seconds.

The Seagate seems to be slow anyway because when I do a backup to it, it takes longer than to an external USB 1T West? hard drive.
I have scanned the Seagate for malware with Malwarebytes, and RougeKiller but found nothing.
Mint takes about 5 seconds to boot on the SSD, and about 1 minute on the Seagate.

What is slowing the Seagate? It is silent, no rattles etc.

As it is 5400rpm it will be slow, if you want higher speeds then upgrade.

You can get a 250GB SSD for approx $75 and a 500GB for about $140 so personally I'd just upgrade the SSD.
Or a compromise, the Seagate SSHD drives do boot up quite a bit faster than a conventional drive but don't match an SSD for overall speed.

some failing drives run as slow as a pig (really slow), yet will pass every test you run.
The only test for that is to replace it & see if it helps

Laptops sometimes have the cheapest possible (ie slow) hard drive factory installed .
Either way, want fast then SSD

The computer is 3 months old. My old Dell Vostro 1015 bought in 2009 has a faster drive, its the original and boots Windows 10 in half the time.

Doesnt mean you cant update the FW. Altho as above if it's a 5400rpm hdd, then it's slow

Theres a good reason I never sell Win10 Pc's & laptops with old school hard drives :-) They are usually just far too slow.

Even if the Seagate is a mechanical drive it shouldn't take 4 minutes to boot, or run slow, unless theres something wrong with the drive.

But this is a bit of a worry ----

You cant just clone the Windows drive, it will be missing partitions, boot instructions (dual booting),you may find its trying to sync with other required info from the SSD.

One way to test this, Disconnect the SSD, wipe the Seagate drive clean, install W10 fresh on the seagate, see what the boot times are like.

Even with a healthy mechanical drive, on the system specs given, should boot in around 30- 45 seconds.(this is with nothing else installed, AV's etc)

I have updated the Firmware, and the BIOS. The drive is reasonably fast now.
If I enable fast boot, or hibernation its quite reasonable as I very seldom have reason to use W10. The problem is if fast boot is enabled it locks all the NTFS partitions and prevents me from sharing them with Mint or a Virtual Machine. As they are Data partitions would conversion to FAT32 solve this?

As for cloning Windows from one drive to another, I do it with Macrium Reflex, it rebuilds the Windows loader, works well
