Thread: Canon printer

  1. #1

    Default Canon printer

    I have a Canon MG5150 printer/scanner, a magic machine.
Unfortunately after many years of reliable service it has died.

The 5150 has two feed trays, bottom front and pullout at the back.
It also has 5 ink tanks.
    Both mandatory requirements for me.

Try as I might I can not find a canon replacement with two trays and 5 inks.
It seems they may have stopped making them.

Do any PC members know of a Canon replacement equivalent for the 5150 or do I have to consider other makes ?
Is the 5150 still available elsewhere ?

What "other makes" are there ?

    Your comments welcome.

Why must it have 5 inks? The colours plus black is enough.

But I was browsing through Pricespy the other week, and found several that took 5, didn't buy any of them in the end, but it wasn't hard to find one.
You could email the manufacturer and ask for some suggestions if you must have that.

Contact Canon in Takapuna. They might be able to service the printer or suggest its latest equivalent.

Well, my Canon MX726 has 2 blacks and 3 colours. Is that what you define as 5 tanks? There's 2 trays at the front, although the top trap seems more for photos than for general printing.
Personally, I try to minimise the number of tanks, as I just see it as more ways they try to separate us from our cash.
Heaven forbid 5 tanks getting flushed dry every time there's a nozzle clean.

That appears to be similar to my Canon MG5460. I am curious how you minimize the number of tanks, as I can hear the dollars ticking
over each time my printer is operated.

    Anything BUT cannon.
They waste so much ink with endless cleaning cycles . 2/3 of the ink can be wasted in its cleaning cycles
Canon are nothing like what they used to be.

If you must have Canon, perhaps a Maxify . They at least have huge ink carts .
Warehouse stationary have some special pricing on them at the moment .

    .
I don't think this is confined to Canon a previous HP Printer did the same. How else do they make their money as they practically give the printers away.

Stopped using inkjet after our last Canon died, now have a Brother colour laser, cheap to use and run and even the toner isn't that expensive. We don't print much so a laser was the obvious choice

I bought an Epson XP-640 late last year, it has 5 tanks, two paper trays in the front, and a CD/DVD printing tray. It has a scanner/copier. So far the only problem is that I haven't so far managed to get it to print envelopes. I replaced a canon pixma 4600 with this.

    So costs.

1)Don't turn the thing off. They waste ink when starting up.

2)It makes NO difference whether you buy laser or ink, the thing to look out ofr is A)How many pages per (toner or cratridge) and B)How much is the (toner or cratridge).

many cheap printers are cheap because they get you with the replacement ink or toner.
People mistakenly think all lasers are economical. They are not.

My son was given a laser by his work, waste of time, it does bugger all pages and the toner costs a fortune.

He is now using my old inkjet - 955 pages for $11.
