Default Manawatu Gorge closed for good

    http://www.stuff.co.nz/manawatu-stan...to-be-bypassed

Every time I see issues like this with massive slips on roads, I wonder why they don't place concrete tunnel sections on the road & allow future slips to pass over the road. You see this in other parts of the world.
The Haast road is another one effected by this. Must be millions spent clearing slips over the years.

During WW11 the Yanks wanted to build a viaduct through there.

Used it a lot in the 1950/1960 era, can't remember a closure tho. someone else might tho!.

Someone did some research on this and could find no reference to this offer by the Yanks.

They really need to do something major there, it's rather disruptive. She's a busy old bit of road.

It does look like the Government is going to have to spend some money to fix the problem. At the moment they have the Pahiatua Track as an alternative route as a short term solution.

The Saddle Road is taking most of the traffic, not the Track. The Track is about 2x as busy as it normally is during commuting hours, with few trucks. The Saddle was partly upgraded after the last major slip but is starting to wear badly, especially in the sections which weren't upgraded.

I reckon it might be closer to say it's closed for bad.

As a retired Civil Engineer, the first thought that occurred to me was to look at a viaduct similar to Arthurs Pass. This was built to allow a major slip to go underneath. Costs would be in many mega$. And would undoubtedly require the road to be closed for several years. The safety aspects of working on an active slip would also be a major problem.
