Default Speed up my computer recomendations

My laptop is running very slow. Does anyone have a recommendation for a free programme that I can download to speed it up?

Your help is appreciated. Thank you.

    No such thing.
Anything that claims otherwise is bogus and malware.

Ccleaner, malware checkers and this: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/dow...-removal-tool/

And if none of that works, then a fresh from scratch reinstall.

Depending on the age and spec of your laptop, and how much you're willing to spend, a fresh install on a SSD could be a really good option.

If that's above what you can do yourself, I'd expect you'd pay around $300 for a PC repair shop to supply and install you a ~250GB SSD and a fresh copy of windows 10, or clone from your old drive, or between $350 and $400 incl the SSD, fresh install and restoring of your data.

    a good memory derag program
Norton Utilities + AVG system speedup
Several defrag progams, all running at once for extra speed

Just kidding, a speedup program may make things alot worse .
As above , a SSD often helps alot , as does a wipe & reload . Perhaps more RAM (if you have less than 4Gb)

Some laptops are simply slow , becoming even slower after the install of the usual needed programs (AV, Office, Dropbox/onedrive, printer software etc)

Could even be MS's "telemetry" . Ive seen that go bad & cause real issues(slowdowns) on quite a few Win7 pc's .

To add to those suggestions, you can go through the startup processes using MSconfig or Ccleaner and stop anything you don't need from loading at startup and go through add remove programs and uninstall any software you no longer have a need for.

A fresh install is the most effective way to clean out bloat and/or malware and sometimes works out easier than trying to clean it out, just make sure if you go that way you know what you are doing and have all the installers and drivers you need to put everything back and have backed up any important files.

A SSD is definitely the biggest improvement you can make to an old laptop as Wratterus suggests. It's a lot cheaper if you can do it yourself of course.

What are the specs of the laptop ?
    CPU speed/type , amount of RAM, Win 7,8, or 10 ?
What AV is installed ? (some do scans when you are trying to get stuff done)
Is it slow just on the internet & email, or slow to open (say ) word, or slow to startup ?
Slow all the time or just certain things ?

What do you mean by slow, booting up or doing something else?

Thanks very much, Pctek, I shall give it a try. Thanks to everyone else for their suggestions.
