    Default SSD recommendations

    Looking for a 250GB ~ 500GB SSD.

Would prefer: Samsung , Intel or Crucial. What about WD blue?

    Your recommendations, please.

    Boot drive or data drive?
Honestly it doesn't make much difference for most home use which one you go with, any of the 4 you mentioned would be a good choice. Shop by price and warranty.

I personally have used a Samsung 850 Evo 512GB and a Crucial MX100 512GB for the last 18 months or so as a C: & D: drive in my Gaming PC. The Samsung is marginally better but not in any noticeable way and their software is a little nicer.
My personal choice would be the Samsung by a hair.

I would go Samsung EVO 850 as well, just for the 5 year warranty.
We've had compatibility issues in the past with Intel so we stay away from them now, unless it is the m.2 version.

    For OS.

Was using a Samsung evo 840 and it died recently just before the warranty. Since they don't have the same model for replacement, they offered to give me a credit and I accepted.

Yep, as said - either Evo 850 or Crucial MX300.

I've been running the evo 850 500gb for about 9 months now.

Works well. But I would like to look at a 120-250 GB m.2 based PCI Express - for extra speed for boot drive.

Bear in mind the law of diminishing returns kicks in once you have ANY SSD. When you go from a standard hard drive to an SSD there's a large difference in load times and program launch times etc and it can be very noticeable. You might go from a boot time of a minute or more down to 20-30 seconds or even less. Thing is a large portion of the boot time is now the BIOS initiating and finding the boot device and starting the boot procedure. If you upgrade from a SATA SSD to an NVME (PCI-E) SSD even though on paper it could be 4 times faster in practice you'd be lucky to knock more than a second or two off the boot times and the difference is going to be a lot less pronounced in general usage.

That said I currently have an M.2 850 evo and as great as it is next time round will be going for something faster. Just because I can.

For M.2 NVMe either a Samsung 960 Evo or Intel 600p if you can find one. Does make a big difference.
