Great idea for Briscoes,they might be able to fit it in on the few days they don't have a sale

On every item Briscoes sells, even at sale time, they make a profit. If they sold retail without discount imaging the profit that they would be making. So why the smoke and mirrors about sales of up to 60% discounts? Merely a marketing ploy I would think.

To be fair, even Briscoes has a bargain on occasion.
This is why places like Pricespy and Priceme are great....do your research on what you want, then see who has it cheapest (within reason, avoiding dodgy stores).

It's called loss leaders to get you in the door

A loss leader is an item that is patently being sold at a loss. For example, Briscoes a few years ago sold a Sunbeam toaster for $5. Got me in the door - and out again clutching my $5 toaster. Rod Duke didn't make any money out of me that day, but I was able to see what other bargain pricing and value for money the store offers, so it was a good ploy as I now always check out Briscoes (and Pricespy) before making any purchases.

Here's Rod on value (in a fairly recent article in NZRetailer):

“I have a sense that value these days means something different to New Zealand customers than it did seven to eight years ago.

“Value used to mean cheapest price and cheapest price invariably meant poorest quality and you’ll see that retailers that occupy that space of New Zealand are generally doing very, very poorly,” he says.

The majority of brands stocked at Briscoes are ones people really desire, Duke says.

“I just don’t sell rubbish and that’s the differentiator I think.

“You know - the proposition of really good quality famous brand name products at real good prices is just irresistible.”
