Default avast! SecureLine TAP Adapter v3

    What is it?

It's on a mates old XP machine and it seems to be interfering with the installation of a Wireless Dongle???

Yes, he has just got Fibre and the installer said he needed it so off he went and bought one.

    Now to get it working.

Looks like it belongs to Avast secureline. Something to do with vpn. If its interfering with something remove it

Yeah, it shows up as Hardware but I’m blowed if I can find any Hardware on the computer I can’t identify.

It's a driver not hardware. If Avast secureline appears in add/remove programs uninstall it

In fact, uninstall Avast completely .
then reinstall it , choose custom install, tick file web & mail options ONLY .(from memory) Dont install all the add on BS .

I some new notebooks come with Avast secureline pre-installed , as a separate program to AV . A VPN client I think. A bit strange if that effects a USB Dongle.

Just exactly what dongle is it. ?
Sometimes the Telecom/Voda internet dongles can be a pain to get to work , needing new software to be found & installed
If its a wifi dongle, it may be a driver issue or even an issue with USB1 on very old XP machines

Ok, well to show there was no ill feeling I uninstalled Avast using Revo Uninstaller and the Wi-Fi Dongle now works. (It’s a Digitech USB 2 802.11N for those interested)

So far I haven’t reinstalled any Anti-Virus and the mate probably doesn’t need one.

I was looking for a free one and it hit me that most of them, with the exception of Eset Nod, have pretty poor form. If they catch anything, they have virtually crippled the computer doing so, especially if it’s an old Socket A XP machine.

Hence, I’ve been looking around on the Internet for what was available and with Nortons – MacAfee – AVG – Avast…, none of which I want a bar of, but there was Avira which I have never used and therefore know nothing about. Any comments on Avira?

Also, I tried to install Malware Bytes, but it seems there is no longer a free version and the latest trial version doesn’t run on old Socket “A” CPU’s.

Thank god new drugs work on old people.

I digress, but seriously I’d go completely mad fixing computers all day, every day, how do you guys do it?

Malware Bytes still have a free version BM you can see it for download at the bottom of their page on the left. The paid version is a lot more prominent so be careful what you are clicking on.

    Thanks for that Clive.

The computer has gone home now and as far as I know is working well, although without any AV or Malware Bytes.

I installed the “Trial Version” of Malware Bytes but it wouldn’t open giving a 0c0???????? error which I looked up on Google and was put down as a problem between the latest version of Malware Bytes and older CPU’s. So the free version may not have worked anyway.

Fingers crossed he won’t turn up with a vintage car and expect it to run on “Alcohol Blended” fuel.
