Default Windows 10 Mail and opening PDF

Using Windows 10 and the Mail app. Receiving mail OK but any attached PDF file shows as filename.pdf but when it is clicked to open it comes up with the Save File box with the file name as filename.pdf but file type states No Extension. If the file is saved then it can be opened fine. If the name is changed in the Save File Box and no .pdf is entered then no extension is added to the saved file.

Adobe Reader is the default program and I have confirmed PDF's configured to use Adobe Reader.

Not sure where to from here?

I would start by using a descent mail app. Not the default tile app bundled with 10 .
    Outlook, Thunderbird, Winlive mail (essentials)

    unlikely , but worth checking...
could also be that its been setup not to download attachments by default, causing issues (thats if its not pop3)

And Win10 seems to screw around with default file associations , could be something to do with that ?

Meant to add that it did work as expected up until a couple weeks ago.

Not my PC and I wouldn't use the mail app myself but it is usable - mostly!

File association is set correctly. It might come right in a couple weeks when the next update comes out.

I'm using Windows 10 mail but not Adobe Reader. Perhaps uninstall Reader and reset back to Edge as default PDF viewer. Does it work then?

Good point Tbird. PDF was the default program when I looked at the PC but maybe this has updated and taken over from Edge. Will give that a go and report back.

Sounds like sumatrapdf, if you install it in Win10.

You can install it but cant make it the default PDF program. Even if you right mouse on a PDF file / open with then select sumatrapdf. It doesnt stick

It doesnt appear in default programs either. Only place it appears, is programs and features.

In bold-- yeah of course you can.

Simply open the notifications. Either from the Settings or Easy way / faster, click on search, Type in Notifications, select it, open default apps, Scroll down the page till you can click on "Choose default by file type" ( takes a few moments to populate) scroll down and find .pdf Click on what ever is the default or whats showing ( IE is default) on the right, select what ever you want. Holds fine.

Not using the portable version by some chance ? that wont show. Any change for a PDF program should also change all pdf files to the said icon/ view ( as long as has a icon) Done it countless times as W10 often when doing updates can restore original associations back to W10 defaults.
