Windows 8 upgrade issue

I have a dell OptiPlex pc she's an old beast it had xp running on it but as xp is now not supported I tried to upgrade it to windows 8.
All was going well putting the windows 8 disc in waiting for it to go through its loading process, And then it all went down hill from there it was due to do it's restart to load up the win 8 OS and now it appears to be dead.

All I get is the dell load up screen with the options of pressing f2 or f12 and that's as far as it goes I'm stuck with a black screen nothing loads from the HDD or from the dvd in built player or even from the portable dvd writer I have to get it to work even usb doesn't work I'm at a loss what to do or should I just bin the pc all together

Is it 32 or 64 bit Win8?? If its 64 bit you cant upgrade from 32 bit. Unless you do a clean install

So what are you doing? Changing the bootdisk in the BIOS to the dvd saving settings then booting from the DVD?

Since it looks like you cant upgrade from XP anyway. You have to do a clean install of 8

Is XP up to date with SP3?

what model dell?
is it cable of running win8 ?

i have same issue, old hardware running xp. just put linux on it to see how it goes.
also have another one which originally had XP but has win7 on it and runs like a dog. i hope to put linux on that to.

If it's a oldie it won't have PAE/NX/SSE2 support for Windows 8

Loading Windows 8 will only get so far before saying it's not supported or you could find out if your CPU is supported

I used a usb bootable drive with win 8 iso on it that worked to a point after i chose f12 option 6 in the bios it asked me if i want to use Western or US Keyboard both options were more or less the same question However after having tried both options i was greeted with this C: command prompt im not to clued up on that type of thing so not sure what to do after that. The pc is 2.8ghz 1gig of ram 2004 model. Xp wouldnt run after the sp3 update before i did all this it kept saying cant support this browser and it wouldnt load a lot of pages etc hence why i tried win 8 on a bootable usb.

In the original question you mentioned:

Did it go right through the install process, then needs to reboot to finish ? If so when it shuts down pull out the USB drive, its not needed as all the files are already loaded onto the hard drive.

This may or may not be the problem, but I've had similar, if a USB drive is attached it wont boot any further.

Dell confirms certain models are fine, others may work as well.:

Did you extract the ISO?? You cant boot from the ISO itself, you have to use something like rufus to extract it to the flash drive
