10/10 Wainui. I agree also music embraced the internet. Movies are still trying to retain control.

Meanwhile I've been going through their catalogue for a while now and am running short of things I want to see even with USA content.
I have been using Unotelly, must remember not to renew it if they manage to block me.

I watch several old TV programs from the late 1950s to the 1990s on US Netflix. They're not available on NZ Netflix. Why?? These aren't modern programs. The only reason I can see is Sky and their Jones and Zone channels. The day that Netflix blocks me US access is the day I cancel my sub and I'll tell them so on their FB page..

The music industry are rubbing their hands.

Just look when Both David Bowie and Glenn Fry passed away, places like Itunes went nuts. With Itunes you only get small samples for free, so they are making money most everytime a famous artist dies as their music sales go up.

The movie industry just appear to have no clues what so ever.

And that will never change as long as we keep going to the picture theaters. Make that unprofitable & they will change very very quickly.

People stopped buying records & CD's, thats what forced a change in the music industry. Remember all the record stores there used to be in Ak (and worldwide), mostly all gone now .

As Neflix etc become more powerfull , the boot will be on the other foot & they will be able to force a change .

I Love movies and watch a lot of them. I have a 60" TV and a surround Sound setup and a Lazyboy chair set up for myself and I still go to the pictures quite often. I think it's still a better experience and atmosphere. I don't think that's really relevant though, it's like suggesting people stopping going to concerts would somehow negatively affect album sales. Stop going to the movies and they'll stop making them.

I don't think the Movie industry is really all that similar to the music industry. Record companies used to make their money from sales of physical CD's and had to adapt to the age of digital downloads where they now make a much greater amount of their money from live concerts and mechandising and a smaller percentage from digital downloads and physical sales. Downloads killed their business model.

The Movie industry however has always made a large proportion of their money from Movie theatre releases and then supplemented than with the rental market and sales of physical copies. Successful movies make a profit before ever being released to streaming services or DVD etc release. TV shows on the other hand usually were ultimately funded by advertising. Both are very different models to the music industry.

No surprises there, the MAFIAA are as usual, completely up the wall.

They don't even say in the article why they want to block countries outside of USA. If it's to keep people in cinemas, surely all the American theaters would have closed down now, if Netflix was stealing the show, since everything is available there.

Surely, the more countries that Netflix operates in, the more customers there will be, and hence more royalties etc for the MAFIAA. But hang on - that would make sense.

Despite having many alternative sources for my entertainment, I also still go to the cinema, as their equipment is better than mine. At least, when they're showing something that isn't the usual drivel, anyway.

Personally, I can't get passionate enough about anything on TV / movies / cinema to justify any sort of subscription service.

However, this Netflix thing is entirely to do with competition.

In the USA there's a multitude of cheap options for accessing all manner of media. The more competition, the lower the prices negotiated with the copyright owners.

In cases like NZ there's a dearth of competition, so the copyright holders can get away with charging a lot more for the same content. Content that is almost the cost of a few jellybeans to subscribers in the USA.

Movies are quite amazing for the insane income stream. It used to be a movie was only seen in the cinema. That was the one and only point of revenue.

Then came TV, and a whole other market, and the option to rescreen the same thing numerous times per year, and on numerous channels.
Then came home VHS, and another revenue stream opened.
Then DVD added another format, then 3D and BluRay.

Now there's online options for even more money from the same old content that paid for itself 100 times over already.
The MPA are simply milking all they can from us. They don't need to. They simply do it while they can because they can.
Less cash in Kiwi hands, more coke and hookers in Hollywood hands.

that may be the reason Netflix is being manipulated, maybe they are not paying their way.
