Default Dual boot win10 with win7?

Ok, so I want to keep Win7 but also be able to boot with Win10.

From what I have read it would seem that Win10 is an upgrade and it over-writes the existing Win7 installation. Is it possible to keep the Win7 and setup Win10 on a separate partition.

Otherwise does one have to purchase a full Win10 copy? If so, that is most unfortunate for MS!

With the new build you might be able to dual boot by entering your Windows 7 key on a clean install. I have no idea if it works though.

In a nutshell - When you upgrade from Windows 7 to 10, you give up the W7 key. W10 registers the motherboard.

Your Windows 7 license won't become invalid by updating to Windows 10. However, it is also part of your Windows 10 license, so you are only allowed to have one Windows 10 or one Windows 7 installation at a time with one key.
While you can do it, there may be problems and its going against the EULA you agreed to.

How would it go if you did a clean install on another partition.
Don't enter the key & skip the activation.
How long would that run until you had to activate.

If you dont activate it will show the message on the desktop, AND You cannot use anything under Personalization e.g. change wallpaper, accent colors, lock screen, themes, etc. All options are there, they are just grayed out and inaccessible. There are workarounds to some tasks if unactivated.

Not to sure how long it will run, maybe typing in the search winver will show when it expires.

It's not meant to be possible with the upgrade version whether you can find a work around or not. To dual boot you should purchase an OEM or retail version of windows 10.
Anything else is a deliberate attempt to get something for free that you are supposed to pay for.

MS uncharacteristically gave us something for free and that's cool, but if you want to use both versions you are supposed to pay for it. It's not unfortunate for MS, you didn't pay for the free upgrade so they lose nothing if you stick with the OS you did pay for.

All I meant by that is it's not microsoft's intention and is against the terms of service, not that it's not actually possible.

It's entirely possible to pirate windows as well, but microsoft would prefer you didn't. Similar thing in effect.

My lips are sealed Wont pirate though, to many problems can occur. Theres plenty of legal ways to do tasks, maybe not as MS intended, but if they make it possible ----- well enough said

On topic -- Have had a W7 OEM, repartitioned the drive and installed the Tech previews as dual boot, no problems at all.

Make an Image of your Windows 7
Upgrade your current W7 to W10
Make a new partition of about 35GB.
Install the W7 image to the new partition.
Run "bcdedit.exe" and make a link to the W7.
You will now have a boot choice on start up.
Remove the "old windows" folder from the "C" partition.
