I've considered it, but I think I prefer pen + paper for note taking. It's still tempting as a computer alone though.

Surface 3 or Surface Pro 3

its better than paper with OneNote, all your note will be digital ink, you can synch them for free to PC/Mac/Web/Android/iPhone etc

Surface Pro 3 would be a great device for uni I reckon. By the time you add the Pen and keyboard cover you're getting around the $1250 mark for the i3 64GB model.

After having bought one of the more higher-end Chromebooks for $490, I'd definitely take that over the Surface Pro 3 I had for a few weeks with work.
Performance differences are negligible, and even the cheaper ~$350 ones will perform quite happily for most tasks.

You've talked about a Mac, so a device running Windows doesn't seem to be a requirement. Given how light they are, the battery life, the speed, and best of all the cost (If you don't find yourself using something a lot, better to have spent ~$350-500 vs $1000-1200), unless you _really_ require a full-blown OS, you can't go too wrong.

9.5 hour rated battery life on my Chromebook, and yeah I got over 9 hours out of mine before I plugged it in to charge, so it's _definitely_ attainable. For a <$500 device I couldn't be happier!

Also, I'll disagree with icow, the HP consumer-level laptops are cheap, and for the price they're great value. Sure they're no Macbook-feeling device, but that's what you get when you pay half the price :P

I've considered a Chromebook, but I think the lack of full Office would be too frustrating. Windows isn't a requirement, but Office is. Otherwise, I was looking at the Asus C300.
