Disk image, copy, clone ... not sure which.

Hi all

Been a while since I've been on the forum, but hope everyone is well and hospitable as ever !

Problem :- I've got a lappy with Win8 OS and I need to do a full backup i.e. everything that's on the HD.

While I need a full backup of the HD for disc failure, stolen comp, or whatever, I still need to be able to transfer files onto my desktop and work on them.

I've done a disk backup with EaseUS Todo Backup v8.5 - free version - on the lappy, but can't open the .pdb file on the desktop. I'm unsure whether I'm using the correct software and / or backup type.

If anyone can help me out, I'd certainly appreciate it ... at this stage, I really don't want to buy software because this is basically a one off situation until I get a few things sorted out.

How did you try to see the backup contents? Within EasUS you can mount a backup to see its contents. Tools/Mount will do it.

The disk image built into Win8 is very very good. It can even restore to a completely differnet PC. You will need a Win8 repair CD to restore back the whole image .
However, MS in their infinite wisdom have buried it , making it not so easy to find the 1st time. Google will show where it is & how to use it.

A disk image, backs up the whole HD into a single file on the USB HD , so you cant just copy docs straight off that backup/image
A clone will WIPE the USB HD that you clone to: it basicly makes a exact copy of everything on the existing HD. You would only do that
if you were installing a new HD .

Livecd.com has the best imaging software out here, not free though , the demo version expires after a week or so.
Western Digitals newest free software is also very good (based on Acronis)

If you only want your data, try something like syncback .

and yes, you can just restore single files if you need them

In case of computer failure, a backup image may be used to recover your computer system or find & restore any necessary files from within an image

You need Easus installed on the desktop as well in order to access the files within the backup from there.

It works seamlessly, much like how Windows Explorer will now show you the contents of Zip files and let you read them as if they weren't part of a single archive file.

I like it.

It looks like a bunch of files are missing (lost or moved) from the Windows\system32 folder.

I seem to remember a case where these folders got renamed, and the files still existed. Maybe that Windows repair app that's running has moved things about a bit.

Have a look through Explorer (with the Show Hidden and System files option enabled) and see if you can find another Windows folder (or similar, like Windows2, or Windows(recovered)), and likewise another version of the system32 folder.

Or simply run a search for any of the missing files and see what if anything turns up.

If they're absent I'd suggest a complete reinstall, after a heap of tests on the integrity of the HDD.
