Default Programs randomly not starting on start up

Yet another problem since getting my hard drive replaced...

Every so often (I'd say every 1 in 4 start ups) over half my start up programs do not start on start up and I have to reboot or open each one manually to get them going. They are not running in the background and the icons are not just hidden - they actually do not start.

Below is a pic showing before and after a reboot. It's generally always those same programs.

    (Win 8.1 btw)

Is this a clean/new install of win, or a clone off the faulty old hard drive

Reload Win, often the quickest fix.
Could be one or more corrupt/buggy program in startup causing issues with the others, could be something in startup scheduled tasks
screwing things up, could be Win corruption, could be corrupt user profile etc etc etc

Old HDD was completely dead, so it was a clean install.

Have exactly the same programs as I did on the old HDD if that makes any difference.

Try using Sysinternal's Autoruns or similar and see if the programs are all in the same startup location. If they are, you may have somewhere to start looking for the problem.
Non-system disk or disk error. Replace and strike any key when ready.

    What's the frost icon?

That loaded fine but the next icon to load probably is crashing explorer and preventing the rest, explorer will try to reload but forgets trying to start up from that point.

What you want to do is disable all start up items and only start one at a time, to find the culprit.

I guess order of start up is OS dependent so it may not be ordered to start up in order if the list, it could be 2 are conflicting with one another.

    Cheers,

    HP CoolSense.

Will try going through that otherwise will try Agent_24's suggestion using that program.

Would rather not do another clean install if I can avoid it.

This is one of those problems that can have several different causes ( as 1101 posted earlier) Could also be Icon Cache corrupted or reg entries deciding to play up when they feel like it or something completely different.

Have a read of the following page: system-tray-notification-icons-showing
As well as a reg fix: fix-notification-area-system-tray-icons-are-messed-up-in-windows-8/ Really its a hit /Miss as to what will and what wont work.

Note: read both sites first, then decide what you want to try first. Personally I'd do the second page ( reg alteration) Make a restore point first - just in case it turns to custard.
