    Default Free Lightbox from Spark!

Just got an email from Spark that they are giving a free 12 month lightbox subscription to Spark home broadband plans!

    Sounds pretty good.

    Anyone here having Lightbox?

I guess they know Netflix is coming to NZ soon.
Cant beat free, but not sure I want to sign up a to a channel of re-runs . Do they have any new , not previously shown TV shows ?

They will require credit card details... for the free trial. Thats where I stopped on the sign up.
Even if you allready have an a/c with Spark for ph/internet.

I did the 1 month free trial, paid for 1 month, then redeemed this 12 month offer on the same account so that's a total of 14 months for $15.
I'm liking it so far and using it mainly to catch up on shows I never watched originally. Long term they'll need to add more content to keep me interested but for free it's a great service. Also works really well on my PS3. Quality seems better than Quickflix but I gave up on that a while back so I'm not up to date there.

I'd sign up if they'd develop a plugin for my Chromecast or Apple TV box. don't fancy buying a laptop with HDMI or iPad or any new hardware to watch it.

It works with Chrome, so would Chromecast work ?

    However
"To watch Lightbox on your PC/Mac, you must have Microsoft Silverlight installed"

    then
"Google will kill Microsoft Silverlight in Chrome by disabling NPAPI plug-in"
    http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/...-npapi-plug-in

So Chrome wont work for much longer.
Not really onto it if they want to compete with Netflix. Netflix no longer requires Silverlight.

I see they have all the old Sienfeild's . Thats very tempting . But where do I fit in all this 'new' TV watching ?
What with all the other media I need to find time for: Xbox, CD's, DVD's, Youtube, old school TV, Movies, ....will I ever go outside again

Yeah, as 1101 mentioned, they need credit card details to sign up! What the heck is this?

    Safe to give them?

As safe as any other retailer etc. Probably much safer than the shops I give my CC to over the phone :-(
But there have been plenty of instances in the US where thousands of customer CC details have been stolen , companies that should have had better internal security systems.

If they simply added it to the existing Telecom bill, Im sure the would get a much larger sign on rate, from the luddites & those a
bit suspicious or weary(me) of everyone wanting CC for free trials .
The tech savvy will sign up regardless, then go to Netfix after a year.

Where can I get free empty pressy cards or CC debit cards ?

    From an article in August

    http://www.nbr.co.nz/opinion/glimpse...parks-lightbox

It sounds like Lightbox's content budget is substantially less than 10% of Sky's content budget.

I'm not sure of Netflix's NZ / Australia's upcoming content budget, but I suspect it'll be larger than Sky's.

Of course, Amazon, Apple, Hulu will also be competing for some NZ viewers.

I saw a figure of 70,000 Lightbox subscribers, before this offer came available. It's going to be hard if Spark is bundling Lightbox now for "free".

I think this excursion the content-provider realm will ultimately cost Spark a lot.

If you have a mac you can extend desktop to appletv. Works a treat.
