Seems less about race and more about sport & money.

So what if a conviction would ruin his career? That's what everyone else would face. Sports stars and celebrities shouldn't be immune.

For me the question is why did the defence lawyer include the fact that his client was Maori in his defence?

The only answer is that he expected a discount on the basis of Race and got it.
