Are there such things as external enclosures for IDE DVD drives? I wouldn't mind putting one of my old drives in one, if they exist of course. Just curious.

Yeah they exist, I have a couple myself. Although buying one new these days might be tricky. You can get them on eBay but they are expensive, mostly because of size and shipping costs thus incurred.
Non-system disk or disk error. Replace and strike any key when ready.
