Default IT learning in school is not about fixing your PC anymore...

It seems Avondale college has got it figured out, and they are in a lower income part of town...

    That's cool!

I dunno why they _need_ Microsoft, ideally what you'd _really_ want is some good diversity. That'll give them the absolute BEST headstart possible for the future.

Developing Android apps can be done on Windows, Linux and OSX. Developing Windows Apps can only be done on Windows. Developing iOS Apps can only be done on OSX.

Developing websites, like Android, can also be done on any OS.

THAT would give them a REAL headstart!

You either got complete rubbish like Office or programming. The programming varied.....but it was programming.

I agree about not needing Microsoft to do all this stuff but I'm guessing that MS was probably pushier than any other big IT corp about providing support and resources for the students so that they can indoctrinate them in to the MS way of doing stuff.
So first in, best dressed... I guess.

As to app development for students, I guess it becomes a subjective thing and in this case MS was possibly pushier about providing all the tools... maybe....

Considering that they probably figure they have the most to gain by showing kids how do develop apps for Windows Phone.. considering that:

Successful iPhone app devs make the most money
Android has the most market share when you combine all of the Android versions on the market

Alternatively a student could create a web app that works across all platforms and devices and still serves the same purpose.

Windows is currently a distant 3rd place interms of devs and earning capacity

Pakuranga college is also focusing more on programming and web development with its computer courses which I'm taking. I'm quite glad that we've moved beyond just fixing pc's. This year they also started a year 9 computer course where they make basic android apps as well.

When I went to rutherford I took the only IT labelled class in the curriculum. It was a typing class that I aced because I'd already learned typing thanks to RuneScape. The teacher was annoyed no end by my refusal to touch type and observe proper hand placement.

Now I hear they're offering things like java programming and ****. Jesus christ I'd have loved to have those classes when I was there. Schools in new zealand need to up their game because an already archaic education system is bringing up kids to fail. Technology is now all encompassing and yet these people, while knowing how to use it, have no idea what goes on in the grand scheme of things so their actual knowledge is sorely lacking.

These classes should help significantly. At least in some respects.

I bet your grandfather was astonished at all the technology you kids had, and the easy syllabus.
