Motorola Moto G is about $300 or the Nokia Lumia 520 is about $200 if you don't mind Windows Phone. Don't know about s/h, seems to be the odd Nexus 4 for around the $250-300 mark.

Any good dual core name brand phone with a decent screen and android 4.xx should be fairly good as a 2nd hand option. A galaxy S2 is still a good phone for example and very close in specs to an S3 mini if you could find one in good condition.

The phones keep getting more powerful but a couple models back is still a great phone from most brands, my S3 still seems awesome and there are now two newer models

Of course, having just spent your pennies on the Moto E, they'll release the Moto D

The Moto E is a cut down version of the G . If you can afford it go for the G with the snapper wallet..
