Default What to migrate going from XP -> Win8.1

So I've not done one of these in aaaaaages

Wifeys grandfather is all worried now that he's been told by SeniorNET that XP support is over, he wants to move to 8.1. Got him a copy, no worries, and PC looks like it'll run it OK.

He's currently running Outlook Express, and unlikely to remember his details (Internet password saved in the router). Migrating this I'm presuming I'll need to move him to Windows Live Mail? Is there anything I should be doing beforehand with the likes of the account settings / saved mail / address book to make the transition easier?

The rest should be OK, just a few documents, and a printer which appears to be supported alright... Just the email stuff I'm dreading, coz I'm lazy and use webmail myself for everything

    Wish me luck

Live mail is similar enough to outlook express that they should be comfortable with it, I use it myself

Dugimodo's links covers it nicely Doing it manually takes only a minute or so.

Just read it carefully, export the address book from within the address book, NOT from within OE then File, import /export/ address book.

if you are unsure of the account details use mailpass View from Nirsoft http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/mailpv.html The download links are near the bottom of the page, right after the Feedback section- the zipped one is fine - no install.

That will tell you the passwords etc.

Be WARNED-- disable or remove nod32 if its installed, the way the program works, some AV's think its a infection because of the way it works, but its not.

I've found at work allot of PCs running WinXP won't install Win 8. You get the BSOD when you try.. They run Win 7 find..

Motherboard isn't the newest but it's a dual-core intel board of some sort, 64-bit support so we'll give it a whirl.

Thanks for the heads up guys, I'll give that a whirl

I understand Win7 doesn't support Outlook Express; does it have Windows Live Mail?
Bugger the cancer. I'm suffering from terminal inertia.

Yep , Win Live mail is a free download. MS keeps changing its name for some reason.

Importing email from Outlook Express is easy. You will need to find the old mail, try searching for "inbox" on the old PC & copy that complete folder to USB.
Then search for *.WAB & copy that to USB
Or install WinLiveMail on the old PC/XP 1st, import settings & mail directly, then export email to USB from the program

Win Live Mail is COMPLETELY different in look & feel to OE. Nothing like it . In my opinion they made it a bit messy & harder to navigate . Import from OE doesnt allways work as expected either . Imported address book/contacts may not be where expected . Sure its easy if youre PC savvy, but if not then.......
The BEST option is to use Outlook, if possible.
