    This problem can be overcome on W7 by using a program called "Loader 7". This repairs the activation.
    For XP there is "remove WAT". Although this allows Windows to continue it is not acceptable to Microsoft Security or Updates and also removes the Genuine Windows logo.

    Got it sorted.
    It appeared the system needed to be powered off and then booted. Restarting wasn't enough
    Thank you to whoever caused that power cut Friday morning for helping me figure this out.

    Windows 8 has been working well for me - hardly remember XP it was so long ago.
    Drinking Central Otago Pinot Noir - but purely for medicinal purposes.
