Laptop keeps cutting out on boot

Well, did what wuppo said and the laptop behaved exactly as he predicted. It let me get all the way into the rescue disks to restore the OS and as soon as I plugged the power supply in the thing cut out again.

So, where to next? I'll have to try and find a competent electronics expert to replace the defective capacitors. I'm not confident of my chances!!

Interesting. I have not heard of that problem before.
I've looked at the photos and read the forum thread on Badcaps, it looks like a trivial exercise for anyone with good soldering skill and equipment.

Assuming of course that is the problem with your one.

I haven't had time to look at the photos...... Yeah, if it IS the problem. I need an "enthusiast" who'll do it for next to nothing just to see if it works. I'm "working on" a couple of people I know. If I can get someone to give it a go I'll get back with the result whichever way it goes.
