Is it possible to migrate to another laptop using an image from the old one?

I have moved Windows 7 Pro from a Dell Vostro laptop to a Toshiba laptop, and just to see if I could, to an old Asus Desk Top PC.
I did this with "Acronis Universal Restore". This program checks to see if there are any drivers which could cause the recipient to crash, and replaces them with generic drivers. This allows Windows to run enabling you to install the correct drivers. Paragon also has a similar program.

You may have to reactivate Windows, depends how different the specs of the two computers are. The Toshiba didn't need it, but the Desk Top gave me an instruction to activate.

Thanks for that mzee. I've decided to chuck in the towel and go for a new laptop (see here), but I'll make a note of that piece of Acronis software for future reference.
