Hard drive failure rate stats

Hey guys,

Just read up on this, my goodness the failure rate of some brands are incredible! Some uber high, some at the other end of the scale.

I won't spoil the results, but they're not really a surprise on which brand, just on how good / bad they all actually are.

Google published similar info a few years back : they have a few HD's I think :-)

Its showed that manufacturers MTBF was just total BS .

I read a lot of these that seem to bag the Seagates but I must say I have never had a issue with a Seagate drive and my machine has 6 of them in it right now.

Statistically one of those should fail within about 2 years. If not, your next one almost definitely will :P

True! Right on the button 2 years of TV recording was enough For the Barracuda 7200.12 1TB drive I had set up for swmbo. Must have been the programs!! Replaced it with a WD drive. Sounds like a good decision. I have used Seagate for years, seems like they may have opted for turnover rather than quality. shame really, this from a 5 year old computer with a Seagate that shows no sign of failing.

I have approx. 10HDD's around in use and as archived backups and some quite old(10yr). From all of the HDD's I had, only one failed and it was relatively new. So the stats shown do absolutely not apply to my heap of hardware. I hope the never hardware is as reliable as the old was.

I used to be a seagate fan, then they had that firmware fault a few years ago and I switched to western digital and have stayed with them. seems like it was the right choice.
Hitachi just aren't that common but I'll keep them in mind for any future drives. Thanks for the link.

Agreed. Over the past 20 years at home I have had two drives fail. From memory they were both Seagates but that's about all I use..
