Default The decline of Western Civilisation ...

Local crop farmer Rab McDowell predicted about 40 per cent of his carrot and maize crops were a ''right off'', but he would know more in the morning.

No wonder they don't put their names on the articles any more ...

You are being too generous by implying spelling was better at some time previously. Well, I suppose it was if one goes back far enough..............

The rot started many many years ago when the teaching establishments both here and in the UK decided that spelling, pronunciation and grammar didn't really matter as long as the children felt good about themselves, and were able to make themselves more or less understood.

Had those who insist the language remain fixed and inviolate been omnipotent for a good long time, they would have had us still grunting and squeaking in caves.

Yes, but at least the grunting and squeaking would have been grammatically correct.

I think the point was, that if we were too precious about the grammar and syntax etc we would have yet emerge from said cave.

I am totally in agreement with what fred-fish posted above. The standards of spelling, grammar and sentence construction are abysmal in our newspapers. They should know better, as should the teachers who fail to teach correct English. Like, whatever!

And no one of with half a brain would argue with at.

The fact is, the world is heading in that direction, and who will stand up and halt it?
