    Default Thunderbird

It's been a few years since I got T-bird and when SWMBO asked me the other day for the password, none of my favourite pw's worked. Is there any way that I can tick a box to show the pw and where should I look for it?

Password? Thunderbird itself doesn't have a password - well mine doesn't seem to have that option. The passwords are on each of the configured accounts - your ISP, gmail, outlook &etc - each has their own password.
Beware if you access mail by some other means - e.g. webmail - you may have changed password through that - then you need to bring T'bird into line.
Either go where you're looking or look where you're going!

    Open the email client Thunderbird.
Click on Tools > Options, and switch to Security > Passwords.
Click on the Saved Passwords button. This displays a list of all email accounts with a saved passwords.
