Replace CMOS battery

Hi

My laptop is not keeping time so I am guessing the CMOS battery needs replacing? Before I start investigating how to fix this is there a way I can confirm that this is definitely the problem?

The laptop is a Sony Vaio S Series. Assuming it is the battery, is it relatively easy to get to the CMOS battery if I try and do this myself? I don't want to have to tear it down completely but am happy to try and attempt a simple fix.

Depends on the exact model, some are dead simple others are not.

With laptops dont always expect it to be a normal CMOS battery, some have the battery in a heat shrink cover with a plug attachment ( had two like this) and they are not as easy to find as the standard CMOS battery.

Some Vaios are easy like This one in the Video -- its got a heatshrink and plug attachment.

Whats the exact model ?

Hi, further to the above, I have noticed that the laptop is not keeping time even when connected to a powersource. Does this still mean the problem is the cmos battery?

The time doesnt rely on power. If the CMOS is dead / flat it'll lose time
