    Default Reistall of windows.

    I want to reinstall windows.

I don't have a disk, only a recovery partition. How would I install from this?

Also, is it possible to reinstall without affecting my linux partition. I know its meant to be very hard to do, was wondering if any of you knew if it was possible?

    Cheers.

Just back up everything on Mint Nick, because Windows may well just destroy the lot.

If you don't repartition or format anything all it usually mucks up is the boot loader which can be fixed. It won't touch any linux partitions unless you tell it to. Restoring grub can be tricky though from memory. I gave up on linux myself. It's not for me.

So, from what I understand, I press f12 to access the boot devices screen. I then select a 'full recovery' and this will reinstall in?

Sorry I may have that totally wrong now that I re-read. recovery partition may well restore the whole disk to the way it wa ssupplied and blow linux away, re-installing from a disk doesn't.

Doesn't matter, I'm pretty much expecting it to - so I'm backing everything up

Ok, backed up everything. Now, a question about how to reinstall. I don't have a disk, but I do have a recovery partition (which comes with all the ASUS crap). It is possible to download a Windows 7 ISO, burn it to a dvd, and install it using my Windows 7 Product Key?

If not, how would I reinstall from my recovery partition?

What Operating System are we talking?

If I recall correctly from experience, the recovery partition only restores to the first partition of the hard drive (C: for Windows), if you could shift what you needed from that partition to another partition, then recovery will not affect the additional partitions. However, in all circumstances you should back up what you need in case this is no longer the case.

The grub loader will be overwritten with Windows NT loader but you can restore grub easily again by using the recovery/repair options from your Linux Mint media or alternatively you can use NT loader to launch Linux but it requires a lot more effort to do this.

Also, why are you reinstalling Windows? You may have a few other options you could take if we understand what you are trying to do.

    Cheers,

    KK
