    Default Ditching ISP

I am ditching my ISP and I have decided (and jumped through many hoops) to go with Actrix.

My problem is I am a bit gun-shy.
The thought of being locked into 12 months with another crap connection is quite worrying.

Any ideas to get around this, some way I can "try before I buy"

Most good ISPs will give you a 2 week or 30 day trial period after which you can cancel without the big fees. If you ring or email Actrix and ask them about it they might have an option like that.

The likes of 2talk don't have a "lock-in period", same for HD.

End of the day, you can still get out of it if you're not getting the service promised. I've just had Orcon ring me now after a complaint to the TDR and we've resolved a 4 month issue. Cost me $31 instead of just shy of the $800 they initially wanted

I am going to contact the TDR and put in a complaint, but I cannot wait around for it to resolve.
I need a better connection now.

If you're wanting to torrent, there's a (probably outdated) page suggesting that Vodafone is best.

The same page indicates that with respect to torrents, NZ rates alonside Thailand, India, Bolivia, Kenya, Pakistan as being pretty damn losy when it comes to companies throttling your connections or blocking Torrent related features.

    Info here: http://wiki.vuze.com/w/Bad_ISPs

We're in great company (not). 3rd world internet for all Kiwis. Oh, and you get data caps and higher rates than the rest of the world as well.

    Enjoy!

No, of course, you can change now if you've already lodged a *formal* complaint with Orcon (In writing), using the words (Or something to this effect) "This is a formal complain". You've then basically gotta give them a week or two after that to finally resolve the issue. You can follow it up with TDR after you've left Orcon.

In the mean time, Actrix are nice, but yeah go for something else that doesn't lock you into a contract. You can get outta it, but it's a bit of a hassle (Though TDR are *real* good). 2talk are soft-launching their DSL (Not overly advertising it) but it's been fantastic thus far for me!

However as others have said, you may be able to ring them and pay an up-front connection fee or something instead of having to get locked in? Have a chat with them... They've won Consumer Mag ISP of the year for a few years (In a row I believe even!) for a reason!

Surely these days a email is "In writing" I don't need to actually print something do I?

2Talk is only offering 100GB plans, thats not enough.

No, doesn't have to be in writing. In an email or similar or submitted via their Contact Us page website doesn't matter.

    They do 300GB (I promise you, I know first-hand coz I'm on it): http://www.2talk.co.nz/access/
