What should I use to find out speeds - uploads & downloads? And what should I expect?

Speed test is not that accurate , in fact its often slower than other tests.
If you have a poor result always call your isp and get them to run a Prequalification for your address. That will give you what phsyical line rate you should have at the address.
Then get them to check what sync rate your modem has. It should be close to that estimation for your address. If it isnt, this would be something phsyical like filters / modem / bad line.
If your sync rates are close to what you should be getting, time to run the speedtest (speedtest.net or your own ISP's one). Your speedtest should be at least 80% of your said line rate. If it isnt, you have a throughput problem. If your speedtests are within margin to your dsl sync rates. This is the maximum speed you expect to get at your house.
Most common things ive had for throughput is bad modem or WIFI interferrence.
Cheers
Agree with Matrix, IF I use other Speed tests like telstras or telecoms, it actually gives a lot more accurate to what I'm meant to be getting.
Must be the slowest it's ever been for me since changing to 2talk:

I mostly do Bitcoin & DigiByte things these days, feel free to say hi on Twitter: https://twitter.com/dgb_chilling
Before you ask a question here, or before you get upset by a response, see here:

Speed test is not accurate as Isaid before.
Heres an example:

Now the real speed, better averages, tested both from Telecoms and Telstra Speed test, both within 5 Mbps
