Plastic Shopping Bags

Remember a few short years back when plastic bags were about to destroy the world and everyone was encouraged/coerced into using those special green "save the world" shopping bags sold in the supermarkets at, collectively, no small expense? As I recall, in the local supermarkets, if you did not use the new bags people gave you a funny look. Several other businesses introduced an extra charge for their previously free plastic shopping bags.
Whatever happened to all that? They have all but disappeared around this area.

They found that 8 million flax kits a week in the landfill was a bit of a problem too.

Perhaps they simply changed to a more environmentally friendly plastic? Hell there was one bag in the sleepout the other day that turned into plastic crisps and completely disintegrated.

Still I do use my enviro-bags. They're pretty useful. Especially the chilly ones.

although edit - i think part of the issue was getting people to remember to bring them. Force of habit I guess.

Plastic shopping bags do have their uses. I use plastic shopping bags as rubbish bin liners in my kitchen. When full of rubbish I then throw the bag into my wheelie bin.

Even though the Supermarkets and the Warehouse no longer give you free shopping bags to put your goodies into I still manage to get sufficient plastic shopping bags from other stores who do supply free plastic shopping bags.

I carry two empty cardboard boxes in the boot of my car to pack groceries in as I am too stingy to pay 5c for a shopping bag. I think that the supermarkets have found a way to get rid of cardboard boxes.

Bobh best answer. I too carry a couple of cardboard apple boxes. Makes things so easy.

the Warehouse no longer give you free shopping bags

The Warehouse do charge $0.10 a bag, but - that is donated to local charities, sports clubs and schools etc, who can benefit into the $1000's just from their local store.

I have an idea that the Supermarkets might also use the money collected for donations to charity.
