Thanks for the kind thoughts, but spare one for me as well. Mrs T is very stoic, never complains and makes no noises when in pain (not even in childbirth, though she has been known to let fly with a few choice words sometimes) but she has a grip like steel and I need the proverbial lump of leather to bite down on as I hear my metatarsals and phalanges cracking under the strain. I reckon I'll need a local anaesthetic more than she does!

    Cheers

You've got to watch some of those installers. Some have accept\decline buttons for the bundled crap before the main install. If you go too fast, you might hit accept on the bundled crap as well.

Pretty pathetic though that Chrome doesn't revert your settings even after you uninstall it.

when you uninstall Chrome, it usually leaves some reg keys behind.

The one in particular that causes the trouble is the html. This is what you do:

    Restore registry settings.
    1. Open Regedit.
    2. Locate the following subkey:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.html

    3. Right click the (Default) value for the .html key and select Modify...
    4. Change the value from "ChromeHTML" to "htmlfile"

Repeat steps for .htm and .shtml keys if they exist.
Update / Upgrades = Replace old bugs with new ones.

That is one reason I never use the default install and always use custom.
It makes me wonder if this is why Chrome appears to be doing so well because of the sneaky installs.

Maybe it's the fact that Chrome breaks your registry settings on uninstall - then people who don't know any better just re-install it and use it because that's the only thing that will work after that.

It is deceptive 'commercial' behaviour like that which would make me ignore a possibly superior product, but supplied by an immoral producer, in favour of a perhaps less effective product supplied by an honest and open producer.

In this case it cost me several hours of my time, which I could only find by foregoing sleep, and in the end it was simply a matter of resetting FF as my default browser, but I had to find that pathway for myself bcause it wasn't documented anywhere.

    One question remains:

Do I still need to make the registry change supplied by Wainuitech, or are there further random problems awaiting me if I don't?

    Cheers

Mrs T's op went OK thanks, it was for removal of a fast-growing lump in one finger and none of the specialists had ever seen anything like it before, which surprised me somewhat. It was removed under a local and all over inside 30 minutes, and is probably a rose thorn that entered the finger joint, which then built up a solid protective laer around it that kept on growing.

She is supposed to be resting, but I reckon her mother was scared by the Energizer Bunny when she was pregnant with her, because not only does she love rabbits, she never stops moving! So, despite my best efforts to keep her resting, she put the washing on one-handed while I was busy tidying the kitchen and has further plans made for the rest of the weekend. I just took a pile of her favourite old movies on DvD upstairs in the faint hope that she might actually rest as ordered, however I just heard the washing machine start again so she is still at it!

Slim build still there. ( http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds ) I do notice though that when a new version comes out that the slim version doesn't come out till about a week later. The "extras" you get with a lot of free programs is just a way for the maker to earn some money and keep the program free I guess.

Hope Mrs Billy recovers speedily from here op and you from your bruising..
My wife is much the same .. never seems to stop rushing about and doing things but seems to get this idea i should be doing the same ... goes right against my nature .. lol
Ever stop to think, and forgot to start again?
