I run a HP Elitebook 2740p laptop, usually on its docking station (with integral CD drive). Due to very short duration battery when it is not plugged in, I also usually have it plugged into the mains. Of late, I have had several instances where the laptop just dies - no warning, just a "piff" sound and everything is shutoff.

After the first instance of this, I examined the laptop carefully (including undocking) and found scorch marks between the docking station and the battery, and where the scorch mark was on the docking station, metal is now exposed. This has now happened perhaps 5 times, all toward the right hand bottom quarter of the docking station.

The laptop boots up fine after each short, with the message "your computer did not shut down properly" etc.

Has anyone else come across this kind of fault?
