Default Got a little smart phone....

I recently moved into the smart phone world, I can see why they are called smart phones, have to say it was a bit smarter than me to start off with, but am getting my head around it now and it is turning out to be a handy little tool (not toy). Have managed to install a few apps on it, wifi scanner, QR barcode scanner, GPS test and a few other tools.

The phone is a Samsung Galaxy Mini GT-S5570 running Gingerbread. I like it, probably like it even more if the battery lasted longer. But wont complain as it only cost me $50.

Are there any apps you can recommend? tools - not games and crap.
Also, I see there is AV software available for it, do you think it is necessary to have an AV programme on a smart phone?
Anything I should uninstall or disable/turn off etc?

    Please and thanks

On Android, you might want one for peace of mind.

    Apps I like;
Pocket - for storing all my login details and passwords
Vodafone app - for checking balance and topping up my prepay
Westpac cashtank - check my bank balance
trademe - much more usable than the browser version on a phone
Onkyo remote - specific to my receiver but it turns the phone into a remote control and streaming device
google goggles - mostly a toy to be honest but it can be handy for identifying things and reading barcodes

    Cheers,
    grabbed pocket - thanks
    got the vodafone app
use NB for banking, they say they are working on an app at the moment
dont use trademe - dont have an account
dont have a Onkyo, but that sounds like a handy tool

Looked at google goggles, that sounds like a good tool, but it tells me "This app is incompatible with your Vodafone Samsung GT-S5570". Not sure why, the app says it requires android 2.2 and up and my version is 2.3.5 so thats a bit sucky.
Thanks for your info , will think more on an AV programme also, any that you suggest?

You don't really need an AV for android, it will only slow the phone down and use more battery.

If you only install trusted apps from the market you will be fine

Just to point out the obvious, completely pointless post...

Anyway, my tablet has McCaffee on it and it seems not to cause any trouble and I had AVG on my phone until a recent reset and now I'm flying AV free. How good they are I couldn't say, neither has ever found anything dodgy to date. If you stick to the official app store and are careful about what you install it's not too needed - reading user feedback on the appstore and watching what permissions an app wants when installing should catch most things. And in the worst case, you do a factory reset and your phone loses any installed aps and contacts and still functions perfectly, it's not like having to reinstall a PC OS.

I will say though, if you phone becomes bloated with apps and seems unstable, think about what you lose before doing a reset. I forgot about everything I had stored in pocket for example and that proved very inconvenient. It has an option to export or online sync it's data so there are ways around that problem.

Computers are like Air Conditioners, they stop working when you open Windows.

I have Advanced Task Killer and Juice Defender on my Vodafone 858. Battery seems to last a bit longer now.
